Helping kids thrive. Building a stronger community.
Prevention is something we can all be part of.
What does prevention mean?
It means helping kids build healthy habits, handle tough situations and make good choices before problems grow. It can be as simple as a caring adult checking in, a parent having an honest conversation or a school helping a student feel like they belong.
Delta County Communities That Care (DC3) brings people together to support our kids and families. We use what local students tell us to decide where our help can make a difference.
What local students are telling us
In 2024, 659 students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 took the Bach Harrison Youth Survey. Our November 2025 action plan highlights these areas where young people and families need support:
These findings help us focus on everyday things that matter: talking with kids about alcohol and drugs, helping them feel connected at school and supporting families with clear expectations and good communication.
Our community has strengths to build on, too. The plan highlights young people’s sense of right and wrong, relationships with caring adults and involvement in their community.
What we are doing to help
- Skills for everyday life: Botvin LifeSkills Training helps middle-school students make decisions, handle peer pressure and say no to alcohol and drugs.
- Support for parents: Guiding Good Choices helps parents talk with their kids, set clear expectations and strengthen family relationships.
- Learning about choices: Prime for Life helps participants understand how their choices can affect their health and future.
- Positive connections: Mentoring and youth activities give kids opportunities to build relationships with supportive adults.
- Community involvement: Sticker Shock brings students and local stores together to share underage drinking prevention messages. Outreach events connect families with helpful information and resources.
Where we want to go next
We want more families to have access to these programs and more people to help deliver them. Our action plan sets goals for 2027: 20 active community members working together, 15 parents completing Guiding Good Choices by June and 10 trained LifeSkills facilitators teaching by June.
You can make a difference
You do not need special training to start helping. Whether you are a parent, student, teacher, business owner or someone who cares about our community, there is a place for you.
- Share your ideas. Tell us what kids and families in your neighborhood need.
- Volunteer. Ask about helping at an event or supporting a youth activity.
- Help parents and kids connect. Share resources or help families find programs.
- Learn to lead a program. Ask about training to teach life skills or support parents.
- Partner with us. Your school, business, church or organization could help with space, outreach or other support.
- Join the conversation. Help us plan activities, understand local needs or find support for this work.
